Double Drop Trailer Dimensions
Also called: double drop trailer, lowboy, double drop deck
A double drop trailer has a low well deck between a raised front deck and a raised rear deck over the axles. The low well takes the tallest freight of any standard trailer.
Double drops are used for tall machinery, tanks, transformers, and other freight that is too tall for a stepdeck. Unlike an RGN, the neck usually doesn’t detach, so freight is lifted on by crane or forklift.

- Well length varies by trailer: 28' is standard and stretch wells reach 34'. DimGenius plans with up to 34' by default; you can cap it in the calculator.
- Freight taller than 11' 6" in the well is over-dimensional and needs permits; the well takes up to 14' with permits.
- Legal freight width is 8' 6". Wider loads are over-dimensional and need permits.
- These are the planning values DimGenius uses. Actual equipment varies by carrier — confirm with yours before booking.
